I have to be honest…I’m emotionally and mentally exhausted.
It seems like every few weeks I’m posting a hashtag that reads: #prayforINSERTNAMEHERE. The news headlines from this summer alone have left the world in a state of shock, terror, anger, & fear. Whether it’s senseless deaths and carnage at the hands of terrorists or rogue police officers, the occurrence of these sick tragedies has become the norm.(Which is pretty fucked up). So, in an attempt to maintain an ounce of sanity in these crazy times, I’ve come up with
10 Things to do when the world seems to be crumbling around us:
1. STOP THE ‘FIRST WORLD PROBLEM’ RANTS
“A good memory is one trained to forget the trivial.” -Clifton Fadiman
Whether you can fathom this or not, your bad experience at Starbucks isn’t the worst thing that could have happened to you today. Before going on a rant about the trivial, “problems” in your life, please consider what people are dealing with in Turkey, France, New Orleans, Orlando, Texas, Baghdad, & Venezuela (just to name a few). I can guarantee that those people would give anything for a traffic jam to be the biggest challenge they experience today.
2. STOP WORRYING ABOUT WHAT PEOPLE THINK OF YOU
“Picture little old me giving a fuck for what a fuck **** gotta say” -Kendrick Lamar, Bitch Don’t Kill My Vibe Remix.
When it comes down to the final moments of your life, I truly doubt that you’ll spend them worried about your Instagram follower count. The majority of our neuroses, anxiety, and stress are caused by our obsession with controlling how people perceive us. Trust me, I know this to be true first hand. I’ve since realized that when tragedy strikes, NONE of the politicking we’ve done for popularity carries any weight on the scale of life. Look, life is WAY too short to spend it living for anyone’s agenda but your own. You’ll never be able to please everyone–so don’t waste precious time trying.
3. MAKE A BUCKET LIST—AND START CROSSING THINGS OFF
“Tomorrow’s way too far away…And we can’t get back yesterday…But we young right now….We got right now….So get up right now…’Cause all we got is right now” -Rihanna, Right Now.
If there was ever a time to do the things you’ve always wanted to, it’s NOW. Don’t plan all the cool things you’ll do with your life for the future; because the future isn’t guaranteed. Just put yourself out there! Try new things, meet new people, and challenge yourself to walk on the adventurous side before it’s too late. Not to sound like the Grimm Reaper but the clock is ticking girl.
4. BE A HOE–IF YOU REALLY WANT TO
“I will not be judged by you or society. I will wear whatever, and blow whomever I want, as long as I can breathe and kneel.”-Samantha Jones, Sex & The City
Sex negativity and slut-shaming are at the TOP of my “shit that ain’t nobody got time for” list—ESPECIALLY in grave times like these. Listen, when the world feels like it’s going to implode at any minute, the last thing you need to be worried about is chastity or getting blue balls. Just make sure that the wild, pre-apocalyptic sex you have is safe, consensual, and fun. If there was ever a time to be hoe, it’s now.
5. SPREAD LOVE—BECAUSE THAT’S WHAT REAL MOBS DO
“Spread love; thats what a real mob do” Lil’ Kim, The Jump Off.
While I’d never take her advice on skincare regimens, Lil’ Kim made a valid point when she said to spread love in her song The Jump Off. With the world being in such a shaken state right now, we should take every opportunity possible to spread the love. We can do this simply by letting someone know that we care about them. We can also do this by not being an asshole to strangers we encounter. You never know how much you could impact someone’s life with just a little kindness.
6. STOP AND SMELL THE ROSES
“Look deep into nature, and then you will understand everything better.” -Albert Einstein
It’s as simple as opening our eyes. Sometimes we get so caught up in the chaos of life that we never stop to appreciate the world around us. Find a way to separate yourself from your day-to-day distractions and simply look around you. You might be surprised by how beautiful your world has been all along.
7. SAY WHAT YOU NEED TO SAY
“Out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks”– The Holy Bible
Basically, if you’ve got some shit to get off your chest, there’s no better time than the present to air it out. You never want to look back with regret at all the things you never said to someone who is no longer around. If you love someone say it, if you’re sorry say it, if you’re angry SAY SO. You may never get a second chance to express the way you feel, so when the opportunity arises, take it.
8. CHASE YOUR DREAMS
“The biggest adventure you can take is to live the life of your dreams.” -Oprah Winfrey
There’s no time like the present to go after what you want. We’ve witnessed enough dreams extinguished by tragedy to teach us that time is truly of the essence. If you know what you want, now is the time to do whatever it takes to get it.
9. SPEAK UP
“Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter.” -Martin Luther King, Jr.
We each have a voice and while we have breath in our lungs we should use them. Whether you use it on the front lines of a peaceful protest or to post an uplifting status update; we all have the power to impact the world for the better.
10. LIVE YOUR LIFE
“Just live your life”– Rihanna & T.I., Live Your life
It’s pretty simple; put the bullshit aside and live your F*CKING life—you only get one.
We can empathize and feel the pain of the world but we cannot stop living. We can’t lock ourselves inside of our homes and expect to avoid death and tragedy. Unfortunately, death is, and always has been, a vital part of our circle of life. While we can’t always escape the grasp of grief and tragedy, we can however enjoy and treasure every minute of happiness we experience in the meantime.
